xDrive OFF on BMW: rear-wheel drive, where possible
xDrive OFF disconnects drive to the front axle on some xDrive BMWs, where the hardware and software allow it. The car then drives the rear wheels only.
To be clear from the start: this is a BETA feature. It does not work on every car and we never enable it without checking the setup first. It can be done in person or remotely over ENET.
What you should know first
- It does not work on every BMW xDrive. Model and year alone do not tell us.
- Only after checking can we tell you whether it can be reverted and what the risks are.
- The car will not become a factory rear-wheel-drive BMW and will not behave exactly like one.
Which cars we check
We start with xDrive BMWs on iDrive 7, G-series: 3 Series G20 xDrive, 4 Series G22 xDrive, 5 Series G30 xDrive, X3 G01, X5 G05 and the M xDrive cars. Each one is checked individually.
FAQ
Can it be switched back to normal xDrive?+
That is something we confirm for your car during the check. We do not promise anything before looking at the setup.
Is it the same as the 2WD mode on the M5 or M3 Competition?+
No. The 2WD mode on some M cars is developed by BMW. xDrive OFF is an experimental feature and we do not promise identical behaviour.
